Our Story
The Hutton-Dabaso Twinning Association was born from a simple act of generosity. In 1999, following a family holiday to Dabaso, Kenya, Hutton resident Mark Orchard returned with a team of builders to construct three classrooms for the local primary school. Inspired by this experience, he proposed a twinning between his village of Hutton, Somerset and Dabaso.
The idea quickly gained support from the local Parish Council, and soon made national headlines. Interest from media outlets like the BBC helped bring visibility to the project, capturing the imagination of both communities.
Later that year, the twinning was formalised with ceremonies in both villages. Over 40 people from Hutton travelled to Dabaso, including local residents, politicians, and a representative from the British High Commission. The emotional and symbolic event marked the beginning of a lasting international friendship.
Since then, our connection has grown through shared projects, regular visits, and continued communication, now made easier with modern technology. Today, Hutton-Dabaso stands as a symbol of what grassroots partnerships can achieve—bridging cultures, strengthening communities, and changing lives.
We continue to support the people of Dabaso through vital education and healthcare initiatives. These include funding school bursaries for secondary education, providing essential supplies, and supporting two dedicated nurses at the local health centre. Together, we work to improve opportunities, health, and quality of life.
